Privacy Policy
Effective: July 8, 2026
Overview
FishingAdvisor is a fishing conditions advisor. We help anglers understand what fish are doing based on current weather, water, and solunar conditions, and we recommend lures and baits matched to those conditions.
You can use FishingAdvisor without creating an account. The web tool at fishingadvisor.app/forecast does not require sign-up, email entry, or any personal identifier to function.
We collect the minimum data needed to make the tool work. We do not sell your data to advertisers or data brokers. We do not track you across other apps and websites.
Data We Collect
Forecast inputs
When you use the forecast tool, you provide:
- Location — by placing a pin on the interactive map. You can search for a named lake or address to position the map, then drag the pin to refine. We use the pin’s latitude/longitude coordinates to fetch local weather and water data. We do not use your browser’s geolocation on the web.
- Target species — chosen from our list (walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, crappie, bluegill, and an “All” option).
- Water type — chosen from our list (lake, river, stream, reservoir, pond, ice).
- Time horizon — when you plan to fish.
We use these inputs only to generate your forecast. They are not linked to a personal identifier, not stored long-term, and not used to build a profile of you.
Usage data
While you use the site we collect basic anonymous usage events — which forecasts you generated, which lure recommendations you clicked, and which pages you viewed. This helps us understand which features are useful and where the tool falls short.
We also collect basic browser and device diagnostics (user agent, viewport size, page load timing) to fix bugs and improve performance.
We use your IP address for rate-limiting (so the free service is fair across all users) and for approximate location fallback if you do not share precise location. The IP is not linked to any personal identifier.
What we do NOT collect
For the web tool, we do NOT collect:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or any contact information
- Account credentials (no accounts exist)
- Photos or images
- Catch records or fishing history
- Payment or financial information
- Cross-site tracking identifiers or advertising identifiers
If we add account features in a future version, this policy will be updated and you will be notified.
Mobile App
FishingAdvisor also offers a native mobile app (iOS and Android). The app requests your device’s location so it can generate on-the-water forecasts anchored to where you are standing. Location is used in-memory to fetch weather/water data and is not sent to any third party outside the processing chain described in “Third-Party Services” below.
The app stores a small amount of preference data locally on your device (your last-used home water, target species, and cached last forecast). This data lives only on your device and is deleted when you uninstall the app or clear its storage in your device settings.
The app does not run background location, does not upload photos, and does not require an account. Push notifications are not part of the current app release; if we add them in a later version, this policy will be updated to describe what is stored and how you can control it.
How We Use Your Data
We use the data we collect to:
- Generate fishing conditions analysis and lure recommendations for the location, species, and water type you select
- Operate the site, fix bugs, and improve performance
- Enforce fair-use rate limits
- Track aggregate usage patterns (anonymized) to understand which features work and which need improvement
We do not use your data to make decisions about you outside the site, to build advertising profiles, or to sell to data brokers.
Third-Party Services
Anthropic (AI processing)
We use Anthropic’s Claude API to generate the fishing conditions analysis and lure recommendations you see on the forecast page. When you generate a forecast, your inputs (location coordinates, species, water type, time of day) and the current weather/water/solunar data are sent to Anthropic for processing.
Anthropic processes this data on our behalf under their API data policy and does not use it to train their AI models. See Anthropic’s Privacy Policy.
Cloudflare (infrastructure)
FishingAdvisor’s site and backend run on Cloudflare’s infrastructure — Workers (serverless functions), Pages (static hosting), and KV/D1 caches. Cloudflare stores the data we collect on our behalf in encrypted form. See Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy.
NOAA (weather data)
We retrieve current and forecast weather data from the National Weather Service (NOAA), a US government agency. The weather data is public and is requested based on your selected location. NOAA does not receive any personal information about you from us — only the location coordinates being queried.
USGS (water temperature data)
Where available, we retrieve current water temperature from US Geological Survey monitoring stations near your selected location. USGS is a US government agency. Like NOAA, USGS does not receive any personal information about you from us.
OpenStreetMap (map tiles and geocoding)
The interactive map and the search box use OpenStreetMap tiles and the Nominatim geocoding service. When you search for a place or the map fetches a tile, OpenStreetMap sees the search query or the map region being viewed — it does not receive any personal information about you from us. Amazon Associates (affiliate links)
FishingAdvisor participates in the Amazon Associates program.
Lure and tackle recommendations on the site (and inside the mobile app once affiliate links are enabled) include affiliate links. When you click one and complete a qualifying purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
We do not share any personal information with the retailer. Clicking an affiliate link takes you to the retailer’s website, where their own cookies, identifiers, and privacy practices apply — not ours. Amazon may set tracking cookies on your browser after you arrive on their site to attribute purchases to our account and to operate their own services. We only receive aggregate commission reports; we do not see what you searched for, browsed, or purchased.
Affiliate links on our pages are clearly labeled with a disclosure beneath each card.
Cookies and Local Storage
Our website (fishingadvisor.app) uses minimal first-party local storage to remember your last-used species and water type preferences across visits so you do not have to re-enter them. We do not load third-party tracking cookies or analytics scripts on our pages.
Exception: if you click an affiliate link, you will leave our site and arrive on the retailer’s site, where they set their own cookies to operate their site and attribute commissions to us — see the affiliate disclosure above.
Data Retention
- Forecast inputs (location, species, etc.): processed in-memory to generate your forecast; cached for up to one hour for performance; not stored long-term tied to you.
- Aggregated usage events: retained for up to 90 days in anonymized form, then deleted.
- Rate-limit records tied to IP addresses: retained for up to 35 days for abuse prevention, then expired automatically.
- Browser/device diagnostics: retained for up to 30 days for debugging, then deleted.
We do not retain any data that personally identifies you. There is nothing to delete by name because we do not store anything by name.
Your Rights
Access and portability
Because we do not collect personal identifiers, we do not have personal data tied to you to provide. If you have questions about what we do collect, contact privacy@fishingadvisor.app.
Deletion
You can clear FishingAdvisor’s local storage at any time using your browser’s site-data clearing tool (web) or by uninstalling the app or clearing app storage in your device settings (mobile).
For rate-limit records tied to your IP address: contact privacy@fishingadvisor.app with your approximate access dates and we can identify and remove the records associated with that IP for that time range.
California residents (CCPA)
If you reside in California, you have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act, including the right to know what categories of personal information we collect, the right to delete your personal information, the right to correct inaccurate personal information, and the right to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information.
FishingAdvisor does not sell your personal information and does not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. To exercise CCPA rights, contact privacy@fishingadvisor.app.
EEA/UK residents (GDPR)
If you reside in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have rights under the GDPR including access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection to processing.
Our lawful bases for processing your data are: (a) performance of the FishingAdvisor service (necessary for the features you request), and (b) our legitimate interests in site reliability and abuse prevention.
To exercise GDPR rights, contact privacy@fishingadvisor.app. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Children’s Privacy
FishingAdvisor is intended for adults 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to FishingAdvisor, contact privacy@fishingadvisor.app and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy as the site evolves — in particular, when we add account features, additional affiliate partners, or push notifications. When we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of FishingAdvisor after an update means you accept the revised policy.
